Double exposure
Polaroid Now+, 2nd Generation
Polaroid Color I-Type Film
2024

Once again I’m using instant cameras and film. My sons bought me a Polaroid Now+, 2nd Generation, for Christmas. Then in January my company let me pick a prize from a catalog for my third employment anniversary. I chose a Fujifilm Instax Mini 11.

The Now+ can be controlled by a phone app. It allows timed and double exposures, as well as full manual control over aperture and shutter speed. I made this photo with the double exposure option.

I’ve shot five or six packs of color and black-and-white I-Type film in the Now+ and have yet to figure out how to get consistently decent photographs from the camera. It needs a lot of light, but it’s also too easy to give it too much light. I have far too many too-dim and washed-out photographs from this camera. I’m disappointed and frustrated. It shouldn’t be this hard, especially when each photograph costs $2.

In contrast, I started getting consistently decent photographs from the Instax Mini by the end of the first pack. The camera and film are not without their foibles. You have zero control over when the flash fires. You also need to immediately protect the just-emerged print from bright light, such as on a sunny day; even a couple seconds will overexpose the print. Also, the prints are very small. At least the packs aren’t as expensive; each print costs about 75 cents. For instant-photography pleasure, among all of the modern instant cameras I’ve tried, the Instax Mini 11 wins.

I say “consistently decent photographs” here because the state of the instant-photography art always leads to soft images with wonky color. You have to manage your expectations.
