Old cars parked: May 2024

Just ten old cars this month. I saw a few more than that, but I didn’t think they were all that interesting. Here are the rules I follow to decide whether to feature an old car here:

  • The car is parked on the street or in a lot
  • The car is not in a car show
  • The car is (or could be) 20 or more model years old

Here now, the cars.

1976-78 Toyota Corolla. Spotted in the Fountain Square neighborhood of Indianapolis. I was struck by how short this car was. I remember when these roamed the Earth by the millions, and I don’t recall having that impression of them then.

1990-2002 Mercedes-Benz 500SL. This belongs to a fellow down the street, who also owns all manner of other interesting cars, some of which you can see in the background.

1992-96 Ford Bronco. Spotted in downtown Charleston, SC. It was hard to miss in this bright orange color.

1986-91 Porsche 944. Spotted in a parking lot near my home. The cornering lamps (or are they fog lamps?) are missing in front. Weird.

1988-94 Chevrolet 1500. Brown used to be a common color for trucks. Spotted at the Lowe’s near my home.

1988-96 Jeep Cherokee. It’s been a hot minute since I found a pre-facelift Cherokee. And then this one is in such good condition! I can’t remember where I came upon it.

1990-96 Buick Roadmaster. At least Buick tried to differentiate this from the Chevy Caprice on which it is based by giving it a very different roof treatment. Spotted in a Whitestown parking lot.

1990-96 Dodge Stealth. A buddy of mine bought one new — leveraged himself to the hilt to get it. Holy crap was that car fun. Spotted in Carmel.

1992-97 Mazda MX-5 Miata. The Mazda logo on the snout was introduced in 1992, so that means this first-gen Miata isn’t from 1989-91. I used to think I wanted one of these, but then a buddy owned one for a while and let me drive it. I’m too tall for it; my eyes look straight at the frame above the windshield. Spotted behind the Dunkin’ Donuts near my home.

1996-98 Honda Civic. It looks like whoever owns this one, babies it. Spotted in a lot near my home.

1999-2003 Ford Explorer. I always thought red was not a good color for these. Spotted in my neighborhood.
