Bridge on State Road 225

The bridge that carries State Road 225 over the Wabash River northeast of Lafayette, Indiana, is closed for repairs. This three-span Pratt through-truss bridge was built in 1912, many years before this road became a state highway, and is the last one-lane bridge remaining on any Indiana highway.

This bridge was last renovated in 1989. INDOT inspections in 2022 found cracks in two vertical truss members, likely caused by overweight vehicles, according to WLFI-TV. INDOT promptly closed the bridge.

According to WLFI-TV, repairs will begin in early 2025. Locals wonder whether that date will hold true given that the bridge sees fewer than 1,000 vehicles per day. The bridge’s Select status in the 2010 INDOT historic bridge survey offers it some protection from demolition.
